Hebrews 3:5-6
Faithful Is as Faithful Does
You may remember the popular mid-1990’s film “Forrest Gump.” There are a number of now-famous quotes as Forrest retells his life sitting on a bench. One is: “Life is like a box of chocolates”…meaning you just never know what is inside until you take a bite. Another was the phrase: “Stupid is as stupid does”…meaning dumb people often do dumb things.
God’s Word to you today from Hebrews 3 highlights the word “faithful”. Moses was a “faithful” servant in God’s house, but Jesus was a “faithful” son over God’s house. And we are God’s house if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. Put another way: we are connected to God’s house if we are…faithful.
Faithful is as faithful does. Very simply, being faithful means being full of faith. If you are full of faith, then you will do the things that faith does. Faithful is as faithful does.
Now, you’ve probably already done the math. What doesn’t compute is your faithfulness, right? You don’t really consider everything you do to be full of faith, do you? You can’t worry and be stressed out and manipulate situations and consider that faithful. You can’t color yourself Christian on a Sunday morning just to shelve it as soon as you slide on the color of your favorite football team. Calculate and tabulate all the ways…are you always full of faith?
Ahhhh, but what does compute is Jesus’ faithfulness. Faithfulness as a son over God’s house. Carrying out the Father’s requirement to be full of faith each and every day of his life so he could hand that faithfulness to you. Jesus’ faithfulness knows no limit. He was mocked and beaten and killed so you could have life and light. Jesus was even faithful to the point of death and was full of faith in rising to life. It is Jesus’ faithfulness which has given you forgiveness for all the missing pieces of your faithfulness. It is his faithfulness that gives you a new lease on faithfulness in your life.
Faithful is as faithful does.
Prayer:
Dear Lord Jesus, your faithfulness has secured my forgiveness and eternal life. Help me to be full of faith in you and in each aspect of my life. Amen.
