Born into the Right Family – October 6, 2016

And now, dear children, continue in him, so that when he appears we may be confident and unashamed before him at his coming. If you know that he is righteous, you know that everyone who does what is right has been born of him.
1 John 2:28-29

Born into the Right Family

If you lived in the mid-19th century and your last name was Carnegie or Rockefeller, it might be said of you, “you were born into the right family”.
In each case, a father left a vast fortune to his children. If you are looking for great financial wealth and you were not “born into the right family”, then you have to obtain those riches on your own.
However, what if great riches awaited not just a handful of fortunate men and women, but were available for the whole world? What if a fortune far greater than money were available to us? What if we replaced the word riches with the word righteous?
No “what ifs” necessary! God declares that those who are born into his family are righteous, that is, right with God and so they do what is right. It is not a hypothetical situation, or wishful thinking, rather a glorious spiritual truth. Despite possessing a vast debt of sin, God declares righteous, in his eyes, those who believe in Jesus. In this, we find true riches.
For all those “born into the right family” there will come a day of reckoning called death. When that day comes what happens to their fortune? Is it placed into a King Tut-like coffin to be carried over to the other side? No, it is left behind—all of it. It is no wonder death casts such a dark shadow over so many people.
What about the righteous? Our reading for today assures us, “we may be confident and unashamed” when our last day arrives.
Righteous from the day of our birth into God’s family we are confident to the day of our death. Now God declares us right and we will be right with God forever. In Jesus’ family, we are rich, now and forever!
Prayer:
Thank you, Father, for bringing me into your family and for granting me the riches of your righteousness. Amen.
