When [Jesus] saw [the ten men who had leprosy], he said, "Go show yourselves to the priests." And as they went, they were cleansed. One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him—and he was a Samaritan.
Luke 17:14-16
Faith to Give Thanks
“I have nothing to be thankful for!” Richard had turned bitter toward God. “I have prayed and prayed, and what has it done for me? Absolutely nothing!”
It could be easy to become like Richard. I pray, and nothing seems to happen. So I give up on God. While this may be a trap waiting to spring on me, there is another which poses a more frequent danger.
The Lord invites me to pray. He also gives me the assurance he will always hear and answer for my good. A strong faith is needed to have this confidence. An even stronger faith is needed to give thanks for what the Lord does accomplish for me.
It is easy to be like the lepers who went on their way. Certainly they were filled with joy because the Lord just answered their prayer. It is more challenging to be like the one who returned to give thanks to the Lord.
Too often I enjoy the Lord’s blessings which fill my life. Just as often I see my prayers answered in a timely and fitting way. Unfortunately, while I am quick to pray and quick to enjoy the Lord’s goodness, I am slow in thanking him. I need to learn from the example of the Samaritan leper. Humbly he fell at Jesus’ feet and worshiped him. When I see all that the Lord has done for me through his undeserved love, is there any other response I can give?
This is why I need to ask for faith. Faith directs me to bring my prayers to the Lord. Faith assures me that the Lord hears and responds to all my requests. Faith even gives me the confidence to trust that the Lord’s answer will always be for my good. Faith, in the end, leads me to give thanks to the Lord.
Prayer:
Lord, give me the faith I need to pray to you, to trust you, and to give thanks for your goodness. Amen.
