We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, "I love God," yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.
1 John 4:19-21
Learning to Love
You learn how to love from your parents.
If you have a parent who demonstrates affection for you, you learn to show affection. If you have a parent who ignores you, you remember how that feels and you vow not to do that to your children.
Our heavenly Father is the perfect parent. He shows love for us and he wants us to respond to his love by showing love to others. He calls us to repentance when we fail. He forgives us when we call on him.
God showed his love for us especially by sending his Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life in our place. Even though he did not deserve to die, Jesus took the punishment for our sins on the cross. We did not see it happen, but by hearing the gospel God led us to believe that it did. Whoever believes in him will not perish, but will have everlasting life.
You have learned how to love from God.
You are honest with other people how to live, but you speak these truths with love. Because you love other people, you call them to repentance when they have wronged you. You forgive them when they're sorry. You do not hold on to hate.
You realize that it is not easy to live that way, but when you need to find strength to forgive and love people, you remember what God has done, in Jesus.
You love because God first loved you.
Prayer:
Lord, remind me of how you love me, and help me to show your love to everyone in my life. Amen.
The devotions on Thursdays and Fridays in September, October, and November are based on the book of 1 John.
