Your God Will Come – December 14, 2016

842x474-Custom-Post-WednesdayDevotion

Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; say to those with fearful hearts, "Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you." Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy.
Isaiah 35:3-6a

Your God Will Come

Daily Devotion – December 14, 2016

Devotion based on Isaiah 35:3-6a

The man's parents took him to every doctor in Jerusalem! "Our son can't see," they might have explained. "Please help him!" Each doctor probably told them the same thing, "Sorry. There's nothing we can do." But then Jesus came and did what no one else could do. He gave the man sight (John 9).

This is just one of the many lives Jesus came and changed. If you traveled to Capernaum in Jesus' day, you could have met a man who was once paralyzed, but now he could walk up and down main street (Mark 2). If you traveled on to the region of the Decapolis, you could have conversed with a man who at one point in his life was deaf and could hardly talk (Mark 7). But then Jesus came and did what no one else could do. He made the lame to walk and the mute to talk.

People were stunned at the changes they witnessed. And these were stunning changes! But they shouldn't have surprised anyone. Isaiah foretold that these things would happen when God would come. The blind would see. The lame would walk. The deaf would hear. The weak would be made strong. The fearful would be made courageous.

God delivered on what he promised. And God still delivers on that promise. Are your hands feeble? Are your knees weak? Is your heart fearful about something in your life? Be strong! Do not fear! Your God has come and this is what we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus came as a lowly baby to do what no one else could do. He came to save us from sin and its many effects.

But then to strengthen us even more, he hasn't stopped coming! He comes to us through his precious Word. He comes to us through the water and word of Holy Baptism. He even comes to us with his own body and blood in the bread and wine of his Supper. And do you know what happens when he comes to us? Our feeble hands are strengthened. Our weak knees are steadied. Our fearful hearts are encouraged with the good news that our God has delivered what he promised. He has come to save!

Prayer:
Gracious Savior, strengthen my feeble hands, steady my weak knees, and drive fear far from my heart with the message that you have come to save. Amen.
