Ready for the End
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) is an arm of the United States Government that springs into action when there has been some major destruction, like a hurricane or flood. FEMA provides funding and help to clean up and help communities get back on their feet again. Nearly $14 billion is reserved annually for this important work.
Interestingly, nearly $6 billion of that annual amount is never used. FEMA is responsible for what they call a Doomsday Scenario—a response plan in case something horribly catastrophic and debilitating happens to the entire country; something like a full-scale nuclear attack. We hope that day never comes. But the United States Government wants to be as ready as possible in case it ever does.
There is another day that has not yet happened in all of history, one that will be even more destructive than a full-scale nuclear attack and one that we know is absolutely coming. God tells us in his Word: "The day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare" (2 Peter 3:10).
In this way, the Bible describes Judgment Day; the last day on which every soul will be judged as worthy of hell or heaven.
But $6 billion will not be enough to guarantee your safety on that day. The cost of sin is far greater. And yet, it is a cost that you do not need to worry about any longer.
"Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people." The full payment that was required to keep you safe on the Day of Judgment has already been made. When Jesus appeared the first time, it was to save. He came so that all who look to him in faith can wait for his second appearance without fear and without doubt about how that day will turn out for them.

Lord Jesus, thank you for the costly payment you made with your perfect life. Help us to live each day on earth focused on you so that we are ready on the day you return to take us to heaven. Amen.
